It Will Affect Amasra's Future…

The Project That Will Affect Amasra's Future Ekorota Bartin

The goal of the project

In the modern world, changes are experienced at different scales and forms in cities and rural areas. With this change, rural living areas face various problems. At the beginning of these problems are the decrease in the quality of life and the loss of rural character. Today, the importance of character and brand in sectoral marketing is becoming increasingly important, and strategies and action plans for improving the quality of life are developed over the concepts of character and brand. For this reason, the concept of character is among the important concepts of development today. Identifying character/identity and branding through identity is an important phenomenon that accelerates sectoral development.

The general objectives determined in line with this foresight are as follows:

  1. Identifying rural identity/character,
  2. mapping rural landscape character,
  3. The rural landscape character of the transformation in rural areas

reduce its negative impact on

  1. Creating ecotourism networks/routes (such as culture routes, wildlife routes, blue routes and green routes) between characters,
  2. “Nature” determined in the Bartın Nature Tourism Master Plan

developing and mapping “tourism values”.

Expected results: Ecotourism emerges as a tool that integrates conservation and development opportunities and increases the quality of life as a result of this integration. To put it more clearly, it is thought that the financial resource to be obtained from the ecotourist will benefit both the area and the people living around the area. Evaluation of rural landscape character within the scope of ecotourism is an effective tool for the integration of conservation and development. Ecotourism networks to be created between the characters (cultural routes, wildlife routes, blue routes and green routes etc.) will make important contributions to the development of this integration in various titles:

  1. Within the scope of the project, volunteer activities will be carried out, whose participants are young people. These activities will ensure local ownership.
  2. It will provide sectoral development opportunities in the long run.
  3. It will form a basis for the development of the local economy on the basis of ecotourism.

Action from Mine Workers

Detailed view from the workers' march - Workers shouting slogans and whistling - Workers arriving in front of the administrative building - General Secretary of the General Mine Workers' Union Hakkı Arslan's speech from mine workers "Do not enter the stove” action- Bartinin Amasra district of HEMA Inc.. Workers working in the mine stopped working by not entering the mine, claiming that they were not given their "double minimum wage" rights.

GMIS General Secretary Arslan: “306 mine workers working in the company are protesting with a work stoppage.” 306 workers working in a private mine in Bartın's Amasra district started a "not going to the mine" protest on the grounds that their salaries were not paid incompletely despite the improvements brought by the "omnibus law". In the morning, the workers gathered at the entrance of the mine in Tarlaağzı village and walked to the administrative building, shouting slogans.

General Secretary of the General Mine Workers Union (GMIS) Hakkı Arslan, in his statement, claimed that the "omnibus law" that came into force in September last year required that miners be paid at least two minimum wages, but the company did not comply with it. The company complied with the provision of the law in the first month. Stating that Arslan said, “However, the next month, while the workers were expecting double minimum wage again, the second minimum wage given before was also cut and no salary was given that month. ''I comply with everything the law provides' When the employer received compensation for our labor, he humiliated us in every sense and did not implement double minimum wage. "306 mine workers working in the company are protesting with a work stoppage," he said.

Arslan emphasized that the company offered them a "double minimum wage with social benefits" but it was not possible for them to accept it and said: "In both cases we filed, the court ruled that the minimum wage is a bare wage and social benefits cannot be included in this wage. We are not slaves, we will get what we deserve and we will continue our action until we get it. If the employer recognizes the law and believes that this state is a state of social law, it should start applying double minimum wage to the mine workers and give them their retroactive rights in installments if necessary.” Mine workers continue their protest at the entrance of the mine.

Why Amasra Doesn't Want a Thermal Power Plant!

Why Don't the People of Amasra and Bartın Want a Thermal Power Plant?

Grounds for objection to thermal power plant

The problems that will arise as a result of the construction of the thermal power plant will cause irreparable damage. In this context, our reasons for not building the thermal power plant, which were presented to the 2nd Review and Evaluation Meeting and have not been taken into consideration so far, are as follows: (Atmış, 2014):

“Hema Integrated Thermal Power Plant Project;

1. It will cause the economic structure of Bartın province to deteriorate.

2. This project, which is dependent on foreign partners, foreign capital, foreign technology, imported coal and foreign workers, will increase foreign dependence on energy.

3. There is no place for this power plant within the borders of Bartın in the Zonguldak-Bartın-Karabük Environmental Plan.

4. According to the regional development plan prepared by the Western Black Sea Development Agency (BAKKA), it is a threat to the local economy.

5. It threatens the urban protected areas of Amasra and Bartın, as well as the Küre Mountains National Park, Turkey's first PANParks Certified national park.

6. It will eliminate this feature of Amasra, which has been included in the UNESCO Temporary Heritage list.

7. The location where the power plant will be built is among the "regions where eco-tourism will be developed" in the 2023 Turkey Tourism Strategy.

8. The region is shown as an "Ecotourism-Focused Development Region" in the 2007-2013 Tourism Action Plan.

9. In the SWOT Analysis prepared under the title of "Environment and Forestry" of Bartın 2023 Strategic Objectives and Provincial Development Plan; thermal power plants are seen as a threat.

10.It requires the evacuation of Tarlaağzı and Gömü Villages and other nearby settlements.

11. It threatens agricultural production in villages such as Karasu, Güzelcehisar, Saraylı, Gürgenpınarı, which practice greenhouse cultivation, strawberry and hazelnut farming.

12. It threatens tourism activities in İnkumu, Amasra, Güzelcehisar, Çakraz and other coastal settlements.

13. Even after 9 years, the investor company could not move on to the coal production phase.

14. Although all the local people are against the thermal power plant, the situation is tried to be shown as the opposite with surveys and reports that do not reflect the truth.

15. The company's EIA public participation meeting could not be held due to the reaction of thousands of people.

we-don't-want-thermal-power-in-amasra

16. The company is having difficulty even finding a suitable place to hold an EIA Public Participation meeting in the region due to public reaction.

17. The place where thermal power plants are planned to be built is a more suitable geography for wind power plants due to its high wind potential.

18. Considering that the company plans to build two separate thermal power plants with a capacity of 2640 MW in the region, it needs to extract 13 million tons of coal annually from the existing mines. At best, only 1/10 of this amount can be extracted annually from existing mines.

19. For the reasons stated in the additional reports, it is clear that imported coal will be burned in the thermal power plant.

20. The number of jobs announced to the public is unrealistic.

21. The power plant will end tourism activities in the region, fishing, strawberries, hazelnuts, etc. agricultural activities and forest products will be damaged. Employment loss in these sectors is not taken into account.

22. It is clear that cooling water will cause serious damage to the marine ecosystem.

23. Damage to the marine ecosystem will cause damage to fishing activities.

24. Since it will be used as an ash storage area by opening wells and galleries for coal mining, the "Kavşak Water Basin", which provides Bartın's drinking water, will be damaged, and the drinking water provided free of charge to the population of approximately 100 thousand people will be in danger.

26. The allegedly scientific report about the "inversion" that will have fatal consequences determines that it is not dangerous only in the summer months when the inversion is at a low level. He does not make a clear determination about the other nine months in which inversion was seriously dangerous.

27. There have not been enough studies on endemic and endangered plant and animal species in the region.

28. The environmental damage that will be caused to the region by more than 10 thermal power plants installed and planned to be built on the Ereğli Amasra line has not been taken into account.

29. If ash storage facilities cannot be built in the junction water basin, approximately 650 thousand tons of ash will be dumped into the Black Sea annually.

30. If the coal produced in Amasra is used in the thermal power plant, it is not explained where the annual 3 million tons of lavvar residue that will arise after the lavvaring process will be stored.

31. The effects of thermal power plants on human health, such as bronchitis, emphysema, acute and chronic lung diseases and vascular diseases, as well as the damage they will cause to the psychological health of the society and the striking decreases in the quality of life, are not taken into account.

32. The amount of natural forest area to be allocated as the power plant area is 380 hectares. Hundreds of hectares of natural forest ecosystem will be eliminated for the power plant building, limestone quarry and ash storage area, and intense land and landscape degradation will occur on the historical and touristic Amasra beaches.

33. The port to be built for coal imports will destroy the Tarlaağzı beaches used by thousands of people in the summer, and the fishing shelter used by hundreds of fishermen will be destroyed.

34. The EIA Application of the Western Black Sea Integrated Thermal Power Plant was not found suitable in terms of location selection, on the grounds that it was located in the same place as the Bartın Thermal Power Plant, which was not formatted in 2010. However, Hema Integrated Thermal Power Plant is located on the same coordinates as Bartın Thermal Power Plant, which was not formatted in 2010.

Massacre Continues for the Thermal Power Plant Planned in Amasra!

Tree Massacre for the Thermal Power Plant Planned in Amasra Continues!

Türkiye Electricity Transmission Inc. Headquarters of Hema Industry Inc. in Amasra. A 54-kilometer energy transmission line will be built in order to include the electricity to be produced at the thermal power plant planned to be established by Turkey in Turkey's interconnected (grid) system by using the switchyard of Zonguldak Eren Thermal Power Plant (ZETES) in Çatalağzı. 36.5 kilometers of the 'Zetes-Amasra TES (HEMA) Energy Transmission Line', which covers the Kilimli and Çaycuma districts of Zonguldak, and the Bartın Center and Amasra districts, will pass through the forest.

43 thousand trees will be cut down

In the Environmental Impact Assessment report prepared for the 380 kilowatt line, a 50-meter corridor will be opened along the 36.5-kilometer line that will pass through the forest. In the report, it was stated that a total of 43 thousand trees of black pine, red pine, oak, hornbeam, yellow pine, chestnut, linden, maritime pine, cedar, beech, willow and locust species in this region are foreseen to be cut down.

TREES ARE BEING CUT, THE VILLAGES ARE REACTIVE

Within the scope of the project, which is planned to meet the energy needs of the industrial facilities in Bartın and Zonguldak continuously and uninterruptedly and to have a positive impact on the economy of the region and the country, tree cutting has been going on for 2 months in the Saraylı Village of Amasra. Villagers reacted to the situation by saying that hundreds of trees have been cut down so far. Ali Özkanca, one of the residents of the village, said:

“They cut down all the trees here in order to build a thermal power plant. If we try to cut down trees from the forest, the state will immediately hit us. All the big big trees were cut down. Every day, these trees are loaded on trucks and taken to forest management warehouses. There is an official massacre going on here.”
Bartın Forestry Operations Directorate officials said that they have so far done 2 thousand cubic meters of stamping on a 9 kilometer line in their area of responsibility within the scope of the project, and about a thousand cubic meters of this has been cut. Officials stated that a thousand cubic meters means approximately 1,500 trees. Zonguldak Regional Director of Forestry Ahmet Sırrı Beşel did not make a statement stating that the project belongs to the general directorate.

'183 hectares of forest area will be destroyed'

Bartın University Faculty of Forestry Lecturer Prof.Dr. Erdoğan Atmış said that a 50-meter-long forest area will be cleared along the 36.5-kilometer line and a total of 183 thousand hectares of forest area will be destroyed. Reminding that this section was made within the scope of Article 17 of the Forestry Law, which allows many facilities such as electricity transmission lines and solid waste facilities to be built in the forest area on the grounds that they would be in the public interest, Atmış said, “We object to this. You can pass this line elsewhere. But you can't bring back the same forest again. In other words, you will also destroy the forest, you will harm the wildlife and social life there. We state this on every platform,” he said.
'TREES ARE CUT FROM THE POWER PLANT WITH AN EIA REPORT NOT APPROVED'

Reminding that the thermal power plant planned in Amasra caused great reactions in the region and that the public opposed the thermal power plant, Atmış said:

“The EIA applications for the thermal power plant did not pass thanks to the great reactions. It was canceled 5-6 times. In other words, thousands of trees are cut down for the thermal power plant, which has not yet been authorized. So many trees were cut down in Soma, but the thermal power plant there had permission. Here, cutting is done for the thermal power plant, which has not yet been authorized.”

The Story of 150 Chinese in Amasra

The Chinese living in Amasra continue to lose their lives in the mines! Interview and article by El Jazeera Magazine in Amasra mine.

They traveled almost as far as the Great Wall of China. They descended 610 meters below the ground. Chinese workers working in the mines in Amasra brought China to the shore of the Black Sea. The reason they came to Turkey from the world's most populous country is to realize their dreams.

Sadik Gulec

We take an elevator down to Turkey's deepest coal mine, 610 meters below sea level, on a plain overlooking the Black Sea, with a green mountain behind it. We are going to the workers who are opening miles of galleries under the sea to supply coal to the Hema Power Plant, which will be built soon, which is affiliated to Hattat Holding. The journey ends when I start to feel the pressure in my ears in the rapidly descending elevator.

When an outside worker opened the iron door of the elevator, the first sentence I heard was in Chinese.

Amasra'daki kömür madeninde daha çok Çince konuşuluyor çünkü çok az Türk işçi var. [SADIK GÜLEÇ]

Workers trying to push a wagon speak Chinese among themselves.

Workers from China open Turkey's deepest and longest galleries. Hattat Holding, which opened this mine to reach the coal deposits under the Black Sea, gave the job to Datong, one of the most important mining companies in China, working as a subcontractor. The company brings its own workers and engineers and employs Chinese workers in the mine opened in this quiet town of the Western Black Sea.

When we reach the far end of the gallery, we see workers drilling through the rocks and placing steel cages on the walls, trying to cover them with concrete. In this place, illuminated only by the headlamps on their helmets, the workers work in series. It's almost impossible to stop and talk to them. Their work is so interconnected that one stop means the whole team stops. Very few Turkish workers work at the facility. That's why they don't need a translator. During my journey through the gallery, I only met a few Turkish workers at the entrance.

“Why did Chinese workers want to work in Turkey, thousands of kilometers away from their country?” The answer to the question is the same as the aspirations and dreams of Turkish workers who once went to Germany: to earn more money here. All of them have dreams that they want to realize when they return. In other words, Türkiye is, in a sense, the Germany of the Chinese.

Came from China, became a Galatasaray fan

Yu Wen Long, chief engineer of the subcontractor Datong Cool Mine Group that brought the workers here, has been working in Amasra for three years. When the Datong mining company offered Yu Wen Long a job, all he knew about Turkey was Galatasaray; “Before I came, I didn't know anything about this country. I had only heard of resort areas such as the Mediterranean. I know that Turkey is very good at football. I love football. I've heard of Galatasaray. I also support Galatasaray here. I loved the natural environment. It's a clean, quiet place. There is no chaos and conflict environment like other Islamic countries. Our workers were very nervous before they arrived. They thought it was similar to Middle Eastern countries like Syria or Egypt. But after coming here and working, they felt a lot of confidence.”

The vast majority of workers come from and around the city of Harbin in northeastern China, known for its hard coal deposits. Our translator, Abdurrahman Öztürk, a Uyghur Turk who came to Turkey from Urumqi and studied at the university, said, “Harbin is China's Zonguldak.” says.

Therefore, they are more experienced than Turkish workers.

Hattat Energy and Mining Inc. Suat Ölmez, Amasra operations manager, said, “Deep well excavations are done very little in Turkey. There are either two or not. Deep wells are the only way to reach mines hundreds of meters deep. There are thousands of wells dug with this technique in China. Of course, they are far ahead of us in terms of experience and technology. We do not have technical personnel trained in this field, but China has very experienced personnel in this regard. Techniques that have never been applied in Turkey are used here.” says.

Binlerce kilometre uzakta da olsalar Çin Devlet Televizyonu'nu izliyorlar. [GENCER YURTTAŞ]

Ölmez explained the reason for preferring the Chinese, "It is not cheap labor force as it is thought from the outside, but they have the technology and trained personnel." he explains. Chinese workers are more specialized in certain subjects. Hattat Holding has digging two separate wells in Bartın, Amasra and Çatalağzı, which is also close to Amasra. The two wells will soon be combined underground. Since Chinese workers are experts in drilling deep wells, their wages may be higher than Turkish workers. A Chinese worker earns an average of 3 thousand liras per month.

He chose Turkey because he was Muslim.

Elindeki telefonda kızının fotoğrafı, kulağındakinde de sesi var. Çin'e gitmek hem çok uzun sürüyor hem de pahalı. İşçiler uzun süre ailelerini göremiyor. [SADIK GÜLEÇ]

There are currently 150 Chinese workers in Amasra. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, 8 thousand 677 Chinese work in Turkey. 1,255 of these workers were employed in coal mines. In addition, Chinese workers and engineers take part in large projects such as the Ankara-Istanbul high-speed train line. The Chinese rank second among foreign workers working in Turkey.

After Zhang Yue Peng worked in other mines in Harbin, he immediately applied when he heard that Turkey was looking for a worker. He especially wanted to work in Turkey. This is because Zhang Yue Peng is a Chinese Muslim. He hails from a Muslim Chinese community in Harbin that dates back hundreds of years. His goal is to earn some money and open a small restaurant with the money he saves when he returns. It has been one month since I came to Amasra. She tells me about her dreams as she shows me a picture of her little five-year-old daughter; “Here, I miss my daughter the most. Sometimes I video chat with my family on the phone or over the internet. If I work for a year, I think I will collect enough money. There is no such high cost in our places as here. With the money I save, I can open a restaurant there.” Stating that he can save up to 15 thousand dollars as a result of a year's work in Turkey, Pheng says that this money is enough for a small place he will open in China.

A Chinese woman in a coal mine

The woman who cleaned the lodging where the workers were staying also came from China. Hei Long Jiang, 52, is from QiTai He city, China. The only female employee here. His wife also works in the mine. When he heard that the company was looking for a cleaner, he applied immediately because he had the opportunity to work with his wife. He has been in Turkey for two years. “Both of my children have grown up. My daughter got married and my son works for a company in China. Now we want to save some money and open a small business in China.” says. Their faces change when they ask how much they have saved and how much more money they need. If they tell, they are afraid that the mafia will haunt them when they return to China.

Hei Long Jiang işçilerin kaldığı lojmanda temizlikçi. Boş bir ranzanın üzeri onun tuvalet masası olmuş. [SADIK GÜLEÇ]

I ask him if he is lonely here. He says that the wife of the company's Chinese director is also here, just befriending him. He did not have the opportunity to make friends with Turkish women. “We don't have much time here. I visited Bartın and Amasra. I ate Turkish food but I couldn't get used to it. But I loved your breads.” he adds. Hei Long Jiang and his wife live in a small room in the prefabricated lodging where other Chinese workers are staying. She puts her makeup on one of the bunk beds in the room and poses in front of them.

Before they came, all they knew about Türkiye was that it was a Middle Eastern country. Therefore, their biggest concern has been safety. That's why Xie Zheng Qi's family strongly opposed his coming to Turkey. Xie Zheng Qi, the father of three, the eldest of whom is in high school, said, “They are all studying. So I have to earn a lot of money.” says. While working in another mine in China, he saw Datong's advertisements and applied for the job; “After I came, I loved this place. I did not expect such a green country. Nature surprised me. I loved having the sea. I saw that Türkiye is a very comfortable country.”

Business manager Cheng Yin He has experienced similar things. But after he came, all his worries disappeared. “When I first came here, we used to lock the doors. I always saw very bad events on the Middle East on the news. I was impressed by them. I saw that the doors were open in Amasra. This is something we have never had. Now we leave our doors open. Nothing happens." He was also surprised that people in Bartın were feeding the pigeons. Laughing, "Pigeons are eaten with us." says. After his return, his aim is to open a place that trades coal. He also doesn't want to answer questions about money.

Their cooks are also from China

All of the workers tried Turkish food but could not get used to it. Exceptions are doner kebab, buttermilk and hazelnuts. Lian Shue Hai cannot forget the döner bread she ate for the first time in Bartın. There is also a kitchen in the dining hall in Lojman. Li Yu Ku cooks the dishes from China. Saying that he had no trouble finding ingredients for Chinese dishes, Li Yu Ku said, “I buy vegetables from the market in Bartın. It's all very fresh.” says.

Some of the mine's technical needs come from China. While these ingredients were coming, the food items that Chef Li Yu Ku wanted were also placed in the containers. More canned foods and spices are coming.

They make double the money

Unlike Turkish workers, Chinese workers at the mine do not take their weekly leave. They work eight hours a day, seven days a week. Sometimes they also worked overtime on it. All their aim is to collect enough money for their dreams and return to their country.

A girl's father Lin ChunYouda is one of those who want to trade after returning to Harbin. While working for the same company in China for seven years, his salary was close to $800. Here, he earns 3 thousand – 3 thousand 500 liras. “I will decide what to do after I return.” says.

When the interview is over, Chinese life continues in Amasra from where it left off. Some people check their watches and look for the family they left in their hometown six hours ahead of Turkey, some go to the kitchen and some to rest.

There is work the next day, and work starts early in the dark mine.

Amasra Mayor Resigned!

Amasra Mayor Emin Timur Resigned From His Party!

Emin Timur, the mayor of CHP, who has done many services in Bartın / Amasra for 5 years, resigned.

President Emin Timur stated the following in his press release:

“After the elections, I came to a point where I struggled with the opposition of my party. After the second year of my mayorship, some people in the party took over the party management with the support of CHP Bartın Deputy Rıza Yalçınkaya and started to work against me. The political pressure that the ruling party put on Amasra Municipality and me and the district administration did not take my side during the policy phase, and I almost came to a point where I struggled with the opposition of my own party. District President Bora Işıkal and the people around him did not stand by the municipality in any of its actions, and did not even attend the openings. In the last local elections, the esteemed deputy and the district organization worked hard for me not to be a candidate. With their stories of intra-party democracy, they first put forward two candidates, and recently a third.

These were not enough, they started slander campaigns to the extent of defamation and insult. After my candidacy, they struggled with 'how can we lose the election' with the behaviors and attitudes they displayed during the election. When we won the election, they were upset and upset.”

– “I will continue to be independent”

Timur said that CHP Deputy Chairman Veli Ağbaba and Erzincan Deputy Muharrem Işık came to the district and listened to both him and the district organization in order to solve the problem and investigate its causes.

Timur said, “They did not go into the depths of the problems by claiming that their time was too short” and concluded his words as follows:

“It's as if they came to Amasra on vacation, not to solve problems. With these feelings and thoughts, I, who have grown up with the CHP culture from my ancestors and fathers, will no longer be able to struggle with these negativities and slanders. For this, I apologize to the people of Amasra, who trusted me and voted with a large majority. I am resigning from my party as I have decided to continue as an independent. I hope that the people of Amasra will understand me, and I will continue my work with the same enthusiasm and excitement.”
