The Mysterious Legacy of Amasra Castle: Tomas Well

1. Strategic Location: The Lifeblood Lurking Between the Inner Gate and the Outer Gate

Located between two monumental defense structures - the Inner Gate and the Outer Gate Tomas Wellwas the only source of water for the castle's inhabitants during the days of siege. Considering that water took precedence over food in medieval castles, it is no coincidence that the well was hidden behind two massive gates - a "secret insurance" with water placed right in the heart of the defense line.

2. Tomas Well in Historical Records

Establishment: Although the exact date of construction is uncertain, the stonework indicates a long period of use from Byzantine to Ottoman.

Visual Evidence: Photographs from the 1930s show that the well is still active and providing clean water.

Local Narratives: It is said that the water drawn from the well was delivered to the castle as well as the surrounding neighborhoods, thus providing life not only for the military but also for civilian life.

3. The State of Today: A Time Capsule Buried in Silence

Today, the mouth of Tomas Well is filled with soil and rubble. Close-up view:

Current Status Observed Problem Potential Risk
Mouth completely closed No access to water supply Deterioration of the historical fabric
Loose wall stones Stone fall Visitor safety

Between the 11th and 15th centuries, the Genoese established trade colonies in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Atlantic Ocean and Northern Europe and built castles on the coasts or repaired and used old castle ruins. There are many settlements used by the Genoese for a while on the Anatolian coast, which has been at the crossroads of important trade routes throughout history. Among these settlements, Yoros Castle, located on a dominant hill of Anadolu Kavağı at the Black Sea exit of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, Galata Tower, although not a castle structure, due to its importance in the urban defense system inherited from the Genoese, Amasra, which was the center of commercial vitality in the Black Sea, especially during the Genoese period. Amasra Anchovy Rice Recipe

AMASRA ANKARA PILAF RECIPE

Materials:

One kilo of anchovies, one glass of rice, two large onions, one tablespoon of peanuts, one teaspoon of currants, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, enough oil.

Fabrication:

The bones of the anchovies are removed, divided into two, washed and drained. Add oil to the pot. Peanuts are roasted with very small onions. Then, add thoroughly washed rice and continue roasting.

Then currants, salt and finally 1 glass of water are added and cooked.

Care should be taken to keep the rice firm.

After turning off the fire, add black pepper and chili pepper and mix.

The bottom of a small deep tray is oiled.

The anchovies are divided into two parts and placed on the tray with the shiny parts facing down. Anchovies are arranged around the edges.

The prepared filling is poured over it and spread. It is covered with anchovies on the side. Cover the rice with the remaining anchovies, with the shiny parts on top, without leaving any space. When arranging the anchovies, place them on top of each other so that they do not get separated as they will shrink while cooking. Bake the anchovies in the oven at 180 degrees until they are cooked. After taking it out of the oven, turn it upside down and serve.

Amasra Lighthouse

Amasra Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the Black Sea, was built in 1863. It is located 77 meters above sea level in a sheltered position against the raging waves and strong winds of the Black Sea. Right next to the lighthouse, adjacent to the lodging building where the lighthouse keeper lives, the three-meter tower fulfills its function completely despite its short stature thanks to its high position.

Ahmet Demirci, the fourth generation to work at Amasra Lighthouseproudly continues the profession he inherited. The lens of the lantern works with a mechanism called "devvar and winding". A weight, which is pulled up by winding it up, allows the lens to rotate as it floats downwards, so the system has to be rewound several times during the night.

The lighthouse, which used to be lit by burning gas, has been electrified since the 1980s. Nevertheless, in case of possible power cuts, it can continue to serve by burning gas in the traditional way. At Earth coordinates 41°45′ North, 32°23′ East. Amasra Lighthouse, which can be seen from 20 nautical miles away, guides sailors approaching from the East, West or North by flashing every 10 seconds.

Amasra Lighthouse is located on Boztepe Island. To the east of the island lies Rabbit Island, while from the western slopes you can watch the sunset in all its glory. If you are lucky, you can also witness the fascinating passage of dolphin pods. Ciciler Street (Cikrikcilar Bazaar)

Wood carving, which has been going on for thousands of years, is still continuing despite the decline in Amasra's historical tow truck bazaar. Wood carving, which has survived from the Phoenician period to the present day, opens a door of bread for the local people thanks to the rich forests of the Black Sea.

Thanks to the lathes located behind and inside the shops Amasra Timber products are transformed into local products such as spice racks, salt shakers, trivets, trays, napkin holders, pens and key chains in the hands of Amasra masters.

The public breakwater is used for walking in the evenings.

On the opposite bank of the mole Amasra Coast Guard There are large mussels lying under the untouched breakwaters. You decide how good an idea it is to go there for mussels, I don't want you to be surprised when the soldiers are behind you for a moment.

Whatever the case, the breakwater is an alternative. If you get bored of swimming on the beach, you go to the breakwater. If you get bored of collecting mussels, you can go to the beach for oysters or to a different place to sunbathe. Amasra Mayor Resigned!

Amasra Mayor Emin Timur Resigned From His Party!

Emin Timur, the mayor of CHP, who has done many services in Bartın / Amasra for 5 years, resigned.

President Emin Timur stated the following in his press release:

“After the elections, I came to a point where I struggled with the opposition of my party. After the second year of my mayorship, some people in the party took over the party management with the support of CHP Bartın Deputy Rıza Yalçınkaya and started to work against me. The political pressure that the ruling party put on Amasra Municipality and me and the district administration did not take my side during the policy phase, and I almost came to a point where I struggled with the opposition of my own party. District President Bora Işıkal and the people around him did not stand by the municipality in any of its actions, and did not even attend the openings. In the last local elections, the esteemed deputy and the district organization worked hard for me not to be a candidate. With their stories of intra-party democracy, they first put forward two candidates, and recently a third.

These were not enough, they started slander campaigns to the extent of defamation and insult. After my candidacy, they struggled with 'how can we lose the election' with the behaviors and attitudes they displayed during the election. When we won the election, they were upset and upset.”

– “I will continue to be independent”

Timur said that CHP Deputy Chairman Veli Ağbaba and Erzincan Deputy Muharrem Işık came to the district and listened to both him and the district organization in order to solve the problem and investigate its causes.

Timur said, “They did not go into the depths of the problems by claiming that their time was too short” and concluded his words as follows:

“It's as if they came to Amasra on vacation, not to solve problems. With these feelings and thoughts, I, who have grown up with the CHP culture from my ancestors and fathers, will no longer be able to struggle with these negativities and slanders. For this, I apologize to the people of Amasra, who trusted me and voted with a large majority. I am resigning from my party as I have decided to continue as an independent. I hope that the people of Amasra will understand me, and I will continue my work with the same enthusiasm and excitement.”

PRESIDENT TIMUR "GIVE YOUR RIGHTS"
Amasra Mayor M.Emin Timur has announced the date on which he will leave his post by not being a candidate again in the upcoming 31 March local elections.he adds.
Mayor Timur came together with the Municipality Employees and made a farewell speech, with the sadness of not being able to fulfill the promise he made to the Workers 10 years ago. Mayor Timur said at the session held in the Amasra Municipality Meeting Hall, “I made a promise in 2009, some of our friends among you are witnesses of this promise. I said that the workers will receive their salaries before their sweat dries, I promised this. Unfortunately, I am saddened by not being able to achieve this. I could not achieve this during my two terms as Mayor. I stated that in exchange for my candidacy again in the upcoming March 31 elections, the workers' salaries would be paid and that I could become a candidate again if this was promised. However, since I could not get the promise of this, I did not run for Mayor again.

10 years have passed, with all its bitter and sweet moments. I'm sorry if I broke your hearts unintentionally. "If I have given you my rights, I forgive you, you also forgive me your rights," he said. After a short conversation, Mayor Timur and the workers took turns saying goodbye to Mayor Emin Timur.

Akçakoca: Hidden Paradise of the Black Sea

Akçakoca, one of the most popular vacation spots in the Western Black Sea, draws attention with its natural beauties and historical texture as a district of Düzce province. This charming town, where the blue of the sea meets the green of the forests, is frequented by local and foreign tourists, especially in the summer months. While Akçakoca offers a peaceful atmosphere for those looking for a quiet vacation, it also has many treasures to discover for nature sports and history enthusiasts. In this blog post, I will discuss in detail why you should visit Akçakoca, the places to visit, why you should go and the businesses in the region. At the end of the post, I will add the distance between Amasra and Akçakoca from Google Maps.

Why Go to Akçakoca?

Akçakoca, Karadeniz’in en temiz plajlarına sahip olmasıyla ünlü.

Akçakoca, which has a rich historical background, is named after Akçakoca Bey, who played an important role in the foundation of the Ottoman Empire. Genoese fortresses, Ottoman architecture and an atmosphere blended with natural beauty make it worth exploring. Its proximity to big cities like Istanbul and Ankara (243 km to Istanbul and 275 km to Ankara) makes Akçakoca an attractive destination for weekend getaways. For those who want to swim in the sea and find peace in nature, this is the perfect balance point.

Places to Visit in Akcakoca

Although Akçakoca is a compact district, it is very rich in terms of places to visit. Here are the points you should definitely see:

Filled with stalactites and stalagmites, the cave's air is believed to be good for asthma and shortness of breath. There are also picnic areas around it, so you can spend a day in touch with nature.
  3. Aydinpinar Waterfalls
Located 10 km from the center, this natural wonder consists of five waterfalls in a row. Moderately difficult hiking trails, the cool waters of the waterfalls and the surrounding greenery make it an ideal spot for trekking and photography. May, August and September are the best months to visit.
  4. Çuhallı Beach
Çuhallı, one of the most popular beaches of Akçakoca, has a blue flag award. The promenade along the beach is surrounded by cafes and restaurants. With its clean sandy beach and calm sea, it is a great place for both swimming and sunbathing. In the summer evenings, you can have pleasant moments with music in the bars on the beach.
  5. Kurugol Canyon

Suitable for activities such as trekking, photo-safari and rock climbing, the canyon offers a visual feast with its impressive views. There are options for those who like challenging trails and those with easy passages.

This mosque, which attracts attention with its modern architecture, started to be built in 1989 and was completed in 2004. Inspired by Seljuk hair tents, its design is one of the buildings worth seeing in the district. It deserves attention both in terms of worship and architecture.
  7. Historic Neighborhood Houses
These houses, one of the oldest settlements of Akçakoca, exhibit simple yet elegant examples of Ottoman architecture. This area, consisting of 160 houses in total, is under protection by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Wandering among the one-story, two-story and high-ceilinged houses is like a short journey into the past.
