Amasra/Bartın Wire Creasing is a traditional handicraft specific to the Bartın region. It is usually created by embroidering thin wires (metal wires that look like thread) in silver or copper color onto the fabric with a special technique. The name “Crushing” comes from the fact that the wires are cut at a certain angle and made into small pieces and then embroidered onto the fabric. Thanks to this technique, sparkling, original patterns and motifs emerge on the fabric.
You can come across examples of Bartın Wire Knitting in workshops, bazaars and stores selling handcrafted products in Bartın city center and touristic areas. These handcrafted products are also exhibited in local markets, souvenir shops and some online platforms.
In summary, Bartın Wire Creasing is one of the rare handicrafts of the Black Sea with its fine workmanship and elegant patterns. This traditional workmanship, which has been going on for centuries, continues to show itself in many areas from souvenirs to local clothes. (File:Amasra.JPG - Wikimedia Commons) Amasra is a port city on the Black Sea coast, famous for its two natural bays, historical castle and unique landscape.
Amasrais today a charming district of Bartın province and has carried the traces of different civilizations throughout history. The city, which fascinated even Mehmet the Conqueror with its natural beauty, was recognized by the Ottoman sultan. "Çeşm-i Cihan" (the eye of the world) (Fatih Sultan Mehmet's "Çeşm-i Cihan" Amasra... - Zonguldak News - Breaking News). From ancient times to the Ottoman period, Amasra has always maintained its importance with its ancient artifacts, coins and strategic location. In this article, the main historical artifacts found in Amasra, the use of coins in the city in various periods and the civilizations to which these coins belong will be discussed.
The oldest known name of Amasra Sesamos'is. Homer's Iliad In the epic, the city of Sesamos is mentioned among the forces coming from the Paflagonian region in the Trojan War (The Importance of School in Girls' Education in the Ottoman Empire (1839-1920) Songül KEÇECİ KURT - Suat POLAT). This information indicates that Amasra entered the stage of history as early as 1200 BC (during the legendary period). Sesamos It is stated that the name comes from the sesame plant that grows around the city and means "land of sesame" (Fatih Sultan Mehmet's "Çeşm-i Cihan" Amasra... - Zonguldak News - Breaking News). Sesamos, which gained importance as a commercial port city in the region since the 6th century BC during the Ionian colonies, continued its existence during and after the Persian domination.
During the Hellenistic period, Amasra experienced the most interesting pages of its history. After the conquests of Alexander the Great, the Persian nobility Princess Amastrisgained power in the region through political marriages. Around 300 BC, princess Amastris brought together small settlements and named them after herself. amastris founded the city (Coins of the Ancient City of Amastris | Agesilaos Ancient Coins Numismatics). This is a rare example of a woman in antiquity founding a city named after herself. Moreover, the queen Amastris, the first female ruler in history to have a coin issued in her name is known as (Coins of the Ancient City of Amastris | Agesilaos Ancient Coins Numismatics). The silver coins minted by Amastris were inscribed in Greek "Basilissēs Amastrios" (belonging to Queen Amastris) and a portrait of a young woman on the obverse (Amastris - Encyclopedia of World History) (Amastris - Encyclopedia of World History). The coins minted during this period can be seen as symbols of Amastris' power and heritage.
(Coins of the Ancient City of Amastris | Agesilaos Ancient Coins Numismatics) An Amasra coin minted in the 4th century BC under the name "Sesamos"; the obverse depicts Zeus wearing a laurel crown and the reverse depicts Demeter with a crown on her head (Coins of the Ancient City of Amastris | Agesilaos Ancient Coins Numismatics). These early coin designs reflect the city's cultural ties to Greek mythology.
The archaeological heritage of ancient Amasra is also felt in the ruins that have survived to the present day. Some temple foundations and architectural fragments dating to the Hellenistic period indicate the vitality of the city at that time. In particular, the rescue excavations carried out in 2017, which are thought to have pre-Roman foundations agora (bazaar square) area reveals that Amasra was an important trade center of the region from the early period (Ancient city in Amasra under excavation | Daily Sabah ). The statues and altars from the Hellenistic period exhibited in the Amasra Museum give clues about the religious and cultural life of the city in ancient times.
Region in the 1st century BC, Roman Empire dominated by the Pontic Kingdom. Amasra, which was in the hands of the Pontus Kingdom, was captured by the Roman commander Lucullus in 70 BC (Amasra - Wikipedia). Amasra in Roman times (Latin amastris), the empire's Paphlagonia continued its development as an important port city and trade center of the province. The famous Roman writer Pliny the Younger wrote about Amasra in a letter to Emperor Trajan. "elegant and beautiful" and states that he sought the emperor's permission to cover an open canal that ran through the center of the city and emitted a foul odor (Amasra - Wikipedia) (Fatih Sultan Mehmet's "Çeşm-i Cihan" Amasra... - Zonguldak News - Breaking News). This anecdote shows that the city's construction activities were also given importance during the Roman period. As a matter of fact, on a city coin from the time of Trajan, Amasra's Metropolis (capital city) is known to bear the title (Amasra - Wikipedia), proving the city's regional prominence.
During the Roman Empire, the face of Amasra was enriched with monumental buildings. unearthed during excavations in the 2020s stoa (columned gallery)reveals the architectural splendor of the city in Roman times (The ancient city founded by Queen Amastris is rising again). This structure, whose marble columns reach 9 meters in height, served as a magnificent gallery surrounding the central square (agora) of the city. Experts believe that the remains of this stoa in Amasra is one of the most important stoas ever unearthed in the Black Sea Region. the most monumental marble structure emphasizing that, despite being a small port city, Amasra reached an architectural level that emulated the great Mediterranean cities such as Ephesus or Side (The ancient city founded by Queen Amastris is rising again).
One of the most interesting artifacts from the Roman period in Amasra Kuskayasi Road Monumentis. This monument is located close to the city center, carved into the rocks on the side of the mountain road, AD 41-54 It was built by Gaius Julius Aquila, governor of the province of Bithynia et Pontus (during the reign of Emperor Claudius) (Amasra - Wikipedia). The Kuşkayası Monument, which was built as an accommodation point on the military road route, includes a niche, an eagle figure and an inscription carved on the surface of the rock. This monument is an indication of the importance that Rome attached to transportation and military infrastructure in the region, and is a unique road monument that is rare in Turkey.
When we look at the history of money, with the Roman rule Roman coins It was put into circulation in Amasra. Gold, the standard of the empire aureus, silver denarius and bronze sestertius such coins were used in the region. However, the city of Amasra continued to mint coins during the Roman period to emphasize its local identity. Especially Antonines and Severuses In some city coins of the period, we see the efforts of the people of Amasra to glorify the city in a mythical way. A remarkable example is the bardic inscriptions on the coins of Amasra. The portrait of Homer scraping and "Homer of Amastris" is the addition of the phrase (The Importance of School in Girls' Education in the Ottoman Empire (1839-1920) Songül KEÇECİ KURT - Suat POLAT). Through these coins, the people of Amasra claimed that the famous epic writer Homer was born in their city and thus tried to increase the cultural prestige of the city (The Importance of School in Girls' Education in the Ottoman Empire (1839-1920) Songül KEÇECİ KURT - Suat POLAT). Since being the birthplace of Homer was an honor held by many ancient cities, Amasra wanted to place itself in a unique position by using this motif on its coins.
Amasra after the Roman Empire was divided into two, Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire territory. During the early Byzantine period, the city maintained its importance and became a bishopric; by the 9th century, the Diocese of Amasra had risen to the top of the religious hierarchy in the region. During the Byzantine period, the city's acropolis was fortified into an inner fortress and a church was built here, which still stands today (Amasra - Wikipedia). This church was rebuilt after the conquest. Fatih MosqueAmasra Castle and continues its existence within Amasra Castle. This work of Byzantine architecture sheds light on the religious life of the city in the early Middle Ages.
Amasra was also subjected to external attacks from time to time during Byzantine rule. Especially in the 9th century Russian (Varangian) raids during which the city was pillaged (Castles.nl - Amasra Castle). These Viking raiders, who reached the Black Sea coast, sacked Amasra in the 830s and destroyed the region. Despite this, the city recovered and largely regained its economic prosperity towards the 10th century (Amasra - Wikipedia). Byzantine historians state that in the 9th century Amasra had a vibrant economy based on crafts, trade and agriculture and was considered one of the most prosperous ports on the Black Sea coast (Amasra - Wikipedia).
During the Middle Byzantine period, Amasra was able to change hands when the central authority was weakened. In 1204, when Constantinople fell to the Latins after the Fourth Crusade, Trabzon EmpireKomnenos family, one of the founders of the Ottoman Empire, dominated the region. As a matter of fact, in 1204 David Komnenos Georgian-Trabzonian forces under the leadership of Amasra captured Amasra and annexed it to the Empire of Trabzon (Castles.nl - Amasra Castle). However, this situation did not last long; within a few years the city Anatolian Seljuks's control for a short time and then returned to Byzantium (Castles.nl - Amasra Castle). These fluctuations show the strategic value of Amasra on the Black Sea trade routes.
The currency used in Amasra during the Byzantine period was the same as that used throughout the empire. gold solidus and then histamenone/nomisma Byzantine coins, such as the Byzantine coins. Local minting of coins largely ceased, and the coins in circulation came from mints based in Constantinople. Archaeological finds in Amasra include Byzantine bronze follis and copper coins, reflecting the city's integration into the Byzantine trading system. Today, the Amasra Museum exhibits Byzantine cross necklaces, oil lamps, ceramics and coins, thus presenting Byzantine traces in daily life (Amasra Museum | Turkish Archaeological News) (Amasra Museum | Turkish Archaeological News).
The Genoese carried out important construction activities to strengthen the defense and ports of Amasra. Amasra CastleMost of the existing fortifications were renovated or rebuilt during this period. In addition to the fortifications rising on ancient and Byzantine foundations, the main entrance gates on the land side of the castle and the front wall (perdahane) were built in the 14th-15th centuries in the Genoese architectural style (Amasra - Wikipedia). It is possible to see Genoese coats of arms and inscriptions on the castle walls. Especially Dungeon Castle (inner castle) and Boztepe island Sormagir Castlewere interconnected in the Genoese period. Kemere Bridge to form a holistic defense system (Castles.nl - Amasra Castle) (Castles.nl - Amasra Castle). One of the Latin inscriptions that the Genoese had placed to fortify the castle shows that a section of the walls "Nicolo Zaccaria" period, indicating that the rulers of Amasra were appointed from Genoese noble families.
Commercially, during the Genoese period in Amasra Coins of Mediterranean origin was in circulation. The Genoese Republic had its own currency Genovino d'oro (Genoese gold) and silver denaro coins in their colonies. In Amasra, these Genoese coins, as well as the coins of other Italian city-states (e.g. the Venetian ducat), were widely traded. Genoese coins recovered during the excavations show that gold coins, especially 14th century Florentine florins and Venetian ducats, were in circulation in Amasra. This is a reflection of the role the city played in international trade. Today, coins and trade seals from the Genoese period occupy an important place in the collection of the Amasra Museum and give visitors an insight into medieval Black Sea trade.
Under Ottoman rule, Amasra initially maintained its military and commercial importance, but over time it became a quiet sanjak center. Mehmet the Conqueror fortified the castle after the conquest and placed a garrison inside, and organized religious life by converting the Byzantine church into a mosque (Castles.nl - Amasra Castle). During the Ottoman period, Amasra Castle became one of the Black Sea's guard posts against enemy attacks, with cannons placed inside (today, examples of these Ottoman bronze cannons are exhibited in the museum garden (Amasra Museum | Turkish Archaeological News)) coastal security has been ensured.
Economically, the Ottoman period witnessed Amasra's continuation as a regional port. Although the volume of trade declined compared to the Genoese period, maritime trade continued, especially with ports on the northern Black Sea, such as Crimea and Akkerman, and with Constantinople. The Ottoman monetary system was fully adopted in Amasra; akçe It was used in the city as the basic silver currency of the Ottoman Empire, followed by gold in the following centuries. sikke-i hasene (sultani) and Mughal Copper coins, such as copper coins, also entered circulation. Since Amasra did not have a small mint until the 17th century, the coins used were usually minted in the mints of Istanbul, Üsküdar or Chios. Nevertheless, many coins from the Ottoman period have been found during excavations. Among these coins, coins from the reigns of Mehmet the Conqueror, Bayezid II and Suleiman the Magnificent are evidence of Amasra's integration into the Ottoman trading system after the conquest.
During the Ottoman period, the demography of Amasra also changed; while some of the Genoese and Greek population was transferred to places like Istanbul and Gallipoli, the Turkish population was brought from the Anatolian interior and settled. When Evliya Çelebi visited Amasra in the 17th century, he wrote that there were about 50 guard houses, a mosque, a bathhouse and a bazaar inside the castle and introduced Amasra as a small but charming town. However, with the change in trade routes and the loss of importance of the port in the following periods, Amasra stagnated economically and evolved into a quiet coastal town dealing mostly with regional fishing and agriculture.
Amasra, Nearly 3000 years of uninterrupted settlement history is almost a living open-air museum of the Black Sea. This city, which has traces of every period from Antiquity to the Ottoman Empire, has been the meeting point of different civilizations. Thanks to its strategic location, it is both a trade base and a military fortress function, Amasra has played a role in every stage of history. Pliny's "elegant and beautiful" that the Genoese called "flowery castle" that he referred to as "Çeşm-i Cihan" Amasra (Fatih Sultan Mehmet's "Çeşm-i Cihan" Amasra... - Zonguldak News - Breaking News), has fascinated travelers and rulers of all eras.
Today, it is possible to see Roman, Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman touches on the walls of Amasra Castle at the same time. A Genoese inscription in Latin on one corner of the castle, an Ottoman monogram on the other corner, a block stone from the ancient period by the sea... All these elements concretely reveal the multi-layered history of Amasra. Amasra MuseumThe museum presents this heritage to visitors with excavated sculptures, sarcophagi, inscriptions, everyday objects and a large collection of coins. Exhibited in the museum garden Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman periods stone artifacts include large jars (pithoi), amphorae, column capitals, inscriptions and cannon roses (Amasra Museum | Turkish Archaeological News). This rich collection is the best evidence of Amasra's historical importance and cultural continuity.
Amasra's historical significance is not only in the past; the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Tentative Listand efforts are underway to enter the permanent list (Amasra Castle (2025) - All You Need to Know BEFORE ... - Tripadvisor). In particular Amasra CastleThe city is preserved for its universal value as part of the network of Genoese trading colonies stretching from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Ongoing archaeological excavations bring new finds to light every year, such as the recently restored Roman stoa, adding to the city's touristic appeal (The ancient city founded by Queen Amastris is rising again) (The ancient city founded by Queen Amastris is rising again).

*****WATCH - only the entrance to the theater is visible, other parts have disappeared or are underground.
Amasra Ancient Theatre is a valuable structure inherited from the Roman period, as well as bearing the traces of many civilizations. The multi-layered history of AmasraAlthough the destruction caused by the current cemetery and road construction has destroyed most of the original architectural elements of the structure, there are still salvageable remains.

The Project That Will Affect Amasra's Future Ekorota Bartin
In the modern world, changes are experienced at different scales and forms in cities and rural areas. With this change, rural living areas face various problems. At the beginning of these problems are the decrease in the quality of life and the loss of rural character. Today, the importance of character and brand in sectoral marketing is becoming increasingly important, and strategies and action plans for improving the quality of life are developed over the concepts of character and brand. For this reason, the concept of character is among the important concepts of development today. Identifying character/identity and branding through identity is an important phenomenon that accelerates sectoral development.
The general objectives determined in line with this foresight are as follows:
reduce its negative impact on
developing and mapping “tourism values”.
Expected results: Ecotourism emerges as a tool that integrates conservation and development opportunities and increases the quality of life as a result of this integration. To put it more clearly, it is thought that the financial resource to be obtained from the ecotourist will benefit both the area and the people living around the area. Evaluation of rural landscape character within the scope of ecotourism is an effective tool for the integration of conservation and development. Ecotourism networks to be created between the characters (cultural routes, wildlife routes, blue routes and green routes etc.) will make important contributions to the development of this integration in various titles:

A statue of an athlete who won a medal in the Olympics in 155 AD was found on a tombstone in Amasra.
“In his thirtieth year, my father had named me Aemilianus. Coming from a noble family, Geminos was my nanny and governess. With a mystical belief, I participated in the festivities celebrated by burning with fire for the god Euios. I was a master in wrestling, spear throwing, pancreas, discus throw, running, jumping and all rhythmic ball games. My trainer was the one who prepared me for success in all these sports. In satyr, I prevailed over Cyzicus and Pergamon, and I personally carried the wreath of Cyzicus. However, the jealous Moira withheld the Pergamon Wreath from me. And my body was destroyed by death in the province of Dor. My teacher Geminoz took my bones to Amastris and left them for eternity in a stone chest decorated with wreaths…”

The Chinese living in Amasra continue to lose their lives in the mines! Interview and article by El Jazeera Magazine in Amasra mine.
They traveled almost as far as the Great Wall of China. They descended 610 meters below the ground. Chinese workers working in the mines in Amasra brought China to the shore of the Black Sea. The reason they came to Turkey from the world's most populous country is to realize their dreams.
Sadik Gulec
We take an elevator down to Turkey's deepest coal mine, 610 meters below sea level, on a plain overlooking the Black Sea, with a green mountain behind it. We are going to the workers who are opening miles of galleries under the sea to supply coal to the Hema Power Plant, which will be built soon, which is affiliated to Hattat Holding. The journey ends when I start to feel the pressure in my ears in the rapidly descending elevator.
When an outside worker opened the iron door of the elevator, the first sentence I heard was in Chinese.
Workers trying to push a wagon speak Chinese among themselves.
Workers from China open Turkey's deepest and longest galleries. Hattat Holding, which opened this mine to reach the coal deposits under the Black Sea, gave the job to Datong, one of the most important mining companies in China, working as a subcontractor. The company brings its own workers and engineers and employs Chinese workers in the mine opened in this quiet town of the Western Black Sea.
When we reach the far end of the gallery, we see workers drilling through the rocks and placing steel cages on the walls, trying to cover them with concrete. In this place, illuminated only by the headlamps on their helmets, the workers work in series. It's almost impossible to stop and talk to them. Their work is so interconnected that one stop means the whole team stops. Very few Turkish workers work at the facility. That's why they don't need a translator. During my journey through the gallery, I only met a few Turkish workers at the entrance.
“Why did Chinese workers want to work in Turkey, thousands of kilometers away from their country?” The answer to the question is the same as the aspirations and dreams of Turkish workers who once went to Germany: to earn more money here. All of them have dreams that they want to realize when they return. In other words, Türkiye is, in a sense, the Germany of the Chinese.
Came from China, became a Galatasaray fan
Yu Wen Long, chief engineer of the subcontractor Datong Cool Mine Group that brought the workers here, has been working in Amasra for three years. When the Datong mining company offered Yu Wen Long a job, all he knew about Turkey was Galatasaray; “Before I came, I didn't know anything about this country. I had only heard of resort areas such as the Mediterranean. I know that Turkey is very good at football. I love football. I've heard of Galatasaray. I also support Galatasaray here. I loved the natural environment. It's a clean, quiet place. There is no chaos and conflict environment like other Islamic countries. Our workers were very nervous before they arrived. They thought it was similar to Middle Eastern countries like Syria or Egypt. But after coming here and working, they felt a lot of confidence.”
The vast majority of workers come from and around the city of Harbin in northeastern China, known for its hard coal deposits. Our translator, Abdurrahman Öztürk, a Uyghur Turk who came to Turkey from Urumqi and studied at the university, said, “Harbin is China's Zonguldak.” says.
Therefore, they are more experienced than Turkish workers.
Hattat Energy and Mining Inc. Suat Ölmez, Amasra operations manager, said, “Deep well excavations are done very little in Turkey. There are either two or not. Deep wells are the only way to reach mines hundreds of meters deep. There are thousands of wells dug with this technique in China. Of course, they are far ahead of us in terms of experience and technology. We do not have technical personnel trained in this field, but China has very experienced personnel in this regard. Techniques that have never been applied in Turkey are used here.” says.
Ölmez explained the reason for preferring the Chinese, "It is not cheap labor force as it is thought from the outside, but they have the technology and trained personnel." he explains. Chinese workers are more specialized in certain subjects. Hattat Holding has digging two separate wells in Bartın, Amasra and Çatalağzı, which is also close to Amasra. The two wells will soon be combined underground. Since Chinese workers are experts in drilling deep wells, their wages may be higher than Turkish workers. A Chinese worker earns an average of 3 thousand liras per month.
He chose Turkey because he was Muslim.
There are currently 150 Chinese workers in Amasra. According to the statistics of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, 8 thousand 677 Chinese work in Turkey. 1,255 of these workers were employed in coal mines. In addition, Chinese workers and engineers take part in large projects such as the Ankara-Istanbul high-speed train line. The Chinese rank second among foreign workers working in Turkey.
After Zhang Yue Peng worked in other mines in Harbin, he immediately applied when he heard that Turkey was looking for a worker. He especially wanted to work in Turkey. This is because Zhang Yue Peng is a Chinese Muslim. He hails from a Muslim Chinese community in Harbin that dates back hundreds of years. His goal is to earn some money and open a small restaurant with the money he saves when he returns. It has been one month since I came to Amasra. She tells me about her dreams as she shows me a picture of her little five-year-old daughter; “Here, I miss my daughter the most. Sometimes I video chat with my family on the phone or over the internet. If I work for a year, I think I will collect enough money. There is no such high cost in our places as here. With the money I save, I can open a restaurant there.” Stating that he can save up to 15 thousand dollars as a result of a year's work in Turkey, Pheng says that this money is enough for a small place he will open in China.
A Chinese woman in a coal mine
The woman who cleaned the lodging where the workers were staying also came from China. Hei Long Jiang, 52, is from QiTai He city, China. The only female employee here. His wife also works in the mine. When he heard that the company was looking for a cleaner, he applied immediately because he had the opportunity to work with his wife. He has been in Turkey for two years. “Both of my children have grown up. My daughter got married and my son works for a company in China. Now we want to save some money and open a small business in China.” says. Their faces change when they ask how much they have saved and how much more money they need. If they tell, they are afraid that the mafia will haunt them when they return to China.
I ask him if he is lonely here. He says that the wife of the company's Chinese director is also here, just befriending him. He did not have the opportunity to make friends with Turkish women. “We don't have much time here. I visited Bartın and Amasra. I ate Turkish food but I couldn't get used to it. But I loved your breads.” he adds. Hei Long Jiang and his wife live in a small room in the prefabricated lodging where other Chinese workers are staying. She puts her makeup on one of the bunk beds in the room and poses in front of them.
Before they came, all they knew about Türkiye was that it was a Middle Eastern country. Therefore, their biggest concern has been safety. That's why Xie Zheng Qi's family strongly opposed his coming to Turkey. Xie Zheng Qi, the father of three, the eldest of whom is in high school, said, “They are all studying. So I have to earn a lot of money.” says. While working in another mine in China, he saw Datong's advertisements and applied for the job; “After I came, I loved this place. I did not expect such a green country. Nature surprised me. I loved having the sea. I saw that Türkiye is a very comfortable country.”
Business manager Cheng Yin He has experienced similar things. But after he came, all his worries disappeared. “When I first came here, we used to lock the doors. I always saw very bad events on the Middle East on the news. I was impressed by them. I saw that the doors were open in Amasra. This is something we have never had. Now we leave our doors open. Nothing happens." He was also surprised that people in Bartın were feeding the pigeons. Laughing, "Pigeons are eaten with us." says. After his return, his aim is to open a place that trades coal. He also doesn't want to answer questions about money.
Their cooks are also from China
All of the workers tried Turkish food but could not get used to it. Exceptions are doner kebab, buttermilk and hazelnuts. Lian Shue Hai cannot forget the döner bread she ate for the first time in Bartın. There is also a kitchen in the dining hall in Lojman. Li Yu Ku cooks the dishes from China. Saying that he had no trouble finding ingredients for Chinese dishes, Li Yu Ku said, “I buy vegetables from the market in Bartın. It's all very fresh.” says.
Some of the mine's technical needs come from China. While these ingredients were coming, the food items that Chef Li Yu Ku wanted were also placed in the containers. More canned foods and spices are coming.
They make double the money
Unlike Turkish workers, Chinese workers at the mine do not take their weekly leave. They work eight hours a day, seven days a week. Sometimes they also worked overtime on it. All their aim is to collect enough money for their dreams and return to their country.
A girl's father Lin ChunYouda is one of those who want to trade after returning to Harbin. While working for the same company in China for seven years, his salary was close to $800. Here, he earns 3 thousand – 3 thousand 500 liras. “I will decide what to do after I return.” says.
When the interview is over, Chinese life continues in Amasra from where it left off. Some people check their watches and look for the family they left in their hometown six hours ahead of Turkey, some go to the kitchen and some to rest.
There is work the next day, and work starts early in the dark mine.

Türkiye Electricity Transmission Inc. Headquarters of Hema Industry Inc. in Amasra. A 54-kilometer energy transmission line will be built in order to include the electricity to be produced at the thermal power plant planned to be established by Turkey in Turkey's interconnected (grid) system by using the switchyard of Zonguldak Eren Thermal Power Plant (ZETES) in Çatalağzı. 36.5 kilometers of the 'Zetes-Amasra TES (HEMA) Energy Transmission Line', which covers the Kilimli and Çaycuma districts of Zonguldak, and the Bartın Center and Amasra districts, will pass through the forest.
43 thousand trees will be cut down
In the Environmental Impact Assessment report prepared for the 380 kilowatt line, a 50-meter corridor will be opened along the 36.5-kilometer line that will pass through the forest. In the report, it was stated that a total of 43 thousand trees of black pine, red pine, oak, hornbeam, yellow pine, chestnut, linden, maritime pine, cedar, beech, willow and locust species in this region are foreseen to be cut down.
TREES ARE BEING CUT, THE VILLAGES ARE REACTIVE
Within the scope of the project, which is planned to meet the energy needs of the industrial facilities in Bartın and Zonguldak continuously and uninterruptedly and to have a positive impact on the economy of the region and the country, tree cutting has been going on for 2 months in the Saraylı Village of Amasra. Villagers reacted to the situation by saying that hundreds of trees have been cut down so far. Ali Özkanca, one of the residents of the village, said:
“They cut down all the trees here in order to build a thermal power plant. If we try to cut down trees from the forest, the state will immediately hit us. All the big big trees were cut down. Every day, these trees are loaded on trucks and taken to forest management warehouses. There is an official massacre going on here.”
Bartın Forestry Operations Directorate officials said that they have so far done 2 thousand cubic meters of stamping on a 9 kilometer line in their area of responsibility within the scope of the project, and about a thousand cubic meters of this has been cut. Officials stated that a thousand cubic meters means approximately 1,500 trees. Zonguldak Regional Director of Forestry Ahmet Sırrı Beşel did not make a statement stating that the project belongs to the general directorate.
'183 hectares of forest area will be destroyed'
Bartın University Faculty of Forestry Lecturer Prof.Dr. Erdoğan Atmış said that a 50-meter-long forest area will be cleared along the 36.5-kilometer line and a total of 183 thousand hectares of forest area will be destroyed. Reminding that this section was made within the scope of Article 17 of the Forestry Law, which allows many facilities such as electricity transmission lines and solid waste facilities to be built in the forest area on the grounds that they would be in the public interest, Atmış said, “We object to this. You can pass this line elsewhere. But you can't bring back the same forest again. In other words, you will also destroy the forest, you will harm the wildlife and social life there. We state this on every platform,” he said.
'TREES ARE CUT FROM THE POWER PLANT WITH AN EIA REPORT NOT APPROVED'
Reminding that the thermal power plant planned in Amasra caused great reactions in the region and that the public opposed the thermal power plant, Atmış said:
“The EIA applications for the thermal power plant did not pass thanks to the great reactions. It was canceled 5-6 times. In other words, thousands of trees are cut down for the thermal power plant, which has not yet been authorized. So many trees were cut down in Soma, but the thermal power plant there had permission. Here, cutting is done for the thermal power plant, which has not yet been authorized.”
